Founded by Barbara Mujica in 2004, Comedia Performance is the official journal of the Association for Hispanic Classical Theater (AHCT), an international organization devoted to the study of the Spanish comedia and other forms of early modern Hispanic theater. The Association brings together literary scholars, theater directors and producers, teachers, and other specialists and enthusiasts of Spain’s Golden Age of theater, fostering collaboration between academic research and theatrical practice.

The journal is dedicated to the study of performance in the Spanish Comedia and related early modern theatrical traditions. It provides a forum for innovative scholarship that explores the intersections between text, staging, history, and theory, with a strong emphasis on performance-oriented approaches. Appropriate subjects for articles include, but are not limited to, historical and modern staging of the comedia, translating the Comedia for performance, performativity, as well as theoretical questions of genre, space, and reception as they relate to staging.
Comedia Performance also welcomes studies on historical aspects of performance, such as audience composition, corral design, costuming, blocking, set design, and spectator response. In keeping with its focus, the journal does not publish purely text-based literary studies. In addition to scholarly articles, it publishes interviews with writers, directors and actors, theater reviews, chronicles of festivals and conferences, and book reviews, offering a comprehensive view of current developments in the field.
By promoting rigorous, performance-centered research and dialogue across disciplines, Comedia Performance plays a central role in advancing the understanding and appreciation of early modern Hispanic theater in both academic and theatrical contexts.
Comedia Performance comes out once a year. All current and lifetime AHCT members receive a copy of the journal.
