ispanists, theater practitioners, educators and aficionados of Spain’s Golden Age of Theater make up the Association for Hispanic Classical Theater (AHCT), an international non-profit organization founded in 1984 and dedicated to promoting and fostering a deeper appreciation of Spain’s classical drama in performance.
Today, the Association sponsors conferences and events, publishes our academic journal Comedia Performance, maintains textual and video archives of early modern Spanish plays, and provides educational resources for teachers, students, and performing arts professionals. In doing so, it helps keep the comediantes community vibrant and engaged across generations and borders.
Spanish Classical Drama, commonly known as the Comedia, is one of the most remarkable theatrical phenomena in the West. In the Early Modern Period, Spain produced more than one thousand playwrights and over ten thousand surviving plays, influencing Europe and the Americas in its own time and far beyond. The AHCT is dedicated to enjoying this cultural treasure and to helping others discover and enjoy it as well.
