Los Angeles: September 17-19, 2026

Welcome to Los Angeles!
AHCT will hold its Annual Spanish Golden Age Theater Symposium on the beautiful campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in conjunction with the LA Escena Los Angeles Festival of Hispanic Classical Theater in September 2026.
AHCT boasts a proud nearly 40-year history of supporting performances of early modern Spanish plays at the Chamizal International Siglo de Oro Drama Festival held annually at the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, Texas from 1979 to 2019. Sadly, the festival was discontinued in 2020 and has not revived. AHCT now continues its mission to encourage the performance of Spain’s classical theater in Spanish and in translation with our efforts to support festivals and companies that stage these plays in other venues and in exciting ways to reach new audiences. This year we are pleased to again collaborate with UCLA’s Diversifying the Classics project and their 5th biennial Festival of Hispanic Classical Theater!

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Barbara Fuchs will deliver the plenary lecture at the conference. Dr. Fuchs is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at UCLA with a joint appointment in the English department. As part of her commitment to the public humanities and collaborative work, she directs the UCLA “Diversifying the Classics” initiative and edits the series “The Comedia in Translation and Performance” for Juan de la Cuesta. She is also director of LA Escena, Los Angeles’ biennial festival of Hispanic classical theater, founded in 2018.
All 2026 conference sessions will be held on campus in Rolfe and Royce halls, just a 25-minute walk to the UCLA Nimoy Theater. On UCLA’s campus, you might want to visit the Fowler Museum of Cultural History, the Meteorite Museum, the Mathias Botanical Garden, or the Hammer Museum of contemporary art and the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden. Other nearby attractions include the Getty Center, the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park, and the Griffith Observatory.
