The deadline for the Hesse Grant Award has been extended to 15 June 2026. The grant recognizes outstanding scholarship by graduate students working on early modern Hispanic theater and performance studies.
The award
The Hesse Grant was established in honor of Everett Hesse, founder of the Bulletin of the Comediantes and an early supporter of the AHCT. It sponsors a one year membership to the AHCT together with the registration the winner needs to present the winning paper at the AHCT symposium, and adds a 600 dollar travel stipend toward the cost of attending.
As part of the annual membership the winner also receives the next issue of Comedia Performance, the journal of the association. In keeping with the mission of mentorship of the AHCT, the panel gives constructive feedback on every submission, so that students can develop their work for the conference and for possible publication. The winning paper will be considered for publication in the journal.
What to submit
- An original research essay of about 8 to 10 pages, double spaced, 12 point type.
- A complete bibliography, which does not count toward the page limit.
- A consistent citation style. MLA is preferred but not required.
- A cover page with contact information, institutional affiliation and degree program.
- Submissions may be written in English or in Spanish.

How submissions are judged
- Originality and significance of the research.
- Quality of the scholarship and of the method.
- Clarity of the writing and of the argument.
- Contribution to the field of early modern Hispanic theater studies.
A panel of AHCT board members and affiliated scholars reviews every submission, and the winner is notified in time to prepare the presentation for the symposium.
