The Association for Hispanic Classical Theater (AHCT) is an international organization whose members include scholars, theater practitioners, educators, and aficionados of Spain’s Golden Age of Theater. Founded as a non-profit organization in 1984, the AHCT is dedicated to promoting and fostering a deeper appreciation of Spain’s classical drama in performance.

Today, the Association sponsors conferences and events, publishes our Q1 academic journal Comedia Performance, maintains textual and video archives of early modern Spanish plays, and provides educational resources for teachers, students, and performing arts professionals. In doing so, it helps keep the comediantes community vibrant and engaged across generations and borders.

Spanish Classical Drama, commonly known as the comedia, is one of the most remarkable theatrical phenomena in the West. In the Early Modern Period, it produced more than one thousand playwrights and over ten thousand plays that have been recorded to date, influencing both Europe and the Americas in its own time and far beyond. The AHCT is devoted to enjoying this cultural treasure and to helping others discover and enjoy it as well. We warmly invite you to join our (spectacular) mission!
